In order to make room for aftermarket intercooler piping with more direct/shorter flow path from the intercooler, the battery had to go. We decided to relocate the battery to the trunk. |
Things needed in order to do this are: - 6 yards of 0-gauge 12V Amplifier Cable - 2 feet of 4-gauge Grounding Cable - 4 Ring Terminals - Electric or Battery powered drill - Crimper/Wire stripper/cutter - Electrical tape - Tool Kit with basic variety of drivers/sockets/screwdrivers |
Remove the positive and negative battery terminals, and loosen the battery clamp. Remove the battery and battery tray from the engine bay. |
The next step is to run the 0-guage power cable from the engine bay to the inside cabin through the firewall. We decided to use the grommet housing the main harness for the car's electricals. This is the most difficult step because the 0-guage is very thick and can barely squeeze through past the main harness. With a little improvisation, we passed a metal wire (wire hanger, fencing) through the hole in the firewall into the engine bay. We wrapped the wire onto the power cable and secured it with electrical tape. The wire was then gently pulled from inside the cabin underneath the dashboard. As soon as the power cable came through a few yards was pulled into the cabin. |
Run the power cable underneath the carpeting on the floor of the car. The cable is very thick so it is best to run the cable on the side in the corner, or in the middle of the car, so that it does not create a perceivable bulge on the floor. Run the cable to the back and under the seat to gain entrance to the trunk. Put the carpet and backseat in place and check for fitment. |
Choose the location in your trunk where you would like to place the battery. Ensure that it is flat, and has nothing uderneath it (i.e. fuel tank), because you will need to drill at least 2 holes for the battery clamp to tighten. Mock up the battery box and clamp to see where you need to drill the two holes for the clamp to hook. Drill the holes and mock up the battery in the box with the clamp hooked to see if the battery is secure. |
Bore two holes in the mat so that the clamp rods can pass through to the hole to hook. Test fit the battery and secure it with the clamp to recheck for fitment. |
Use a crimper to crimp ring terminals to each end of the power and ground cables. You will need these terminals to attach the cables to battery terminals and to a grounding point on the frame of the car. |
If you are lucky you will find unused bolt holes in the trunk of your car. Ground the battery via one of these bolt holes using a bolt through the ring terminal of the ground cable. |
Connect the power and ground cables to their respective battery terminals so that they can be connected to the battery. Since you previously connected ring terminals to the ends of the cable, these can be simply bolted to the battery terminals. |
Now back to the front of the car. Connect all the wires that were previously bolted to the positive battery terminal, to the new positive cable that you attached a ring terminal to. You can simply bolt all of them together. This will connect the battery to what needs to be powered. Ensure that you properly tape up the positive wires to avoid risk of grouding, which could potentially lead to an electrical fire. |
Ensure that everything is fastened and secure before attempting to connect the battery terminals to the battery and start the car. Check and double-check all connections made and be sure that there are no loose or open connections, tape everything up properly. |
Finished results: As you can see the battery is tucked neatly to the side of the trunk and the spare tire is still accessible underneath. Now there is ample space in the engine bay for intercooler piping that would not fit otherwise. |
